User Modelling, ontologies, MOOCs, Computer Science course design & assessment

After competing his Honours degree on building user models in 1991, Ronny Cook worked briefly under Judy Kay on associated work on user viewable user models, before moving into private industry in a range of system administration and technical support roles. These were primarily for Message Handling Systems and TMX (a University startup which later moved into the ISP space), and later for Ebit (a privately owned company that provides backend services for a group of recruitment companies). While working for Ebit, Ronny was again drawn into questions of matching user expectations with software behaviour, as well as issues with reliability and parsing of user-provided resumes (AKA “the average resume is 90% inspiration and 10% perspiration”). Ronny is currently completing a Master of Philosophy in Engineering & IT under his original Honours supervisor, Judy Kay, in relation to user modeling & ontologies, and performing related work for the CRC.
